Cordyceps militaris has quickly become one of the most highly sought-after mushroom varieties on the market, their trade value far surpassing even the street price of illegal magic mushrooms. This is due primarily to their high concentrations of cordycepin, a biochemical compound which has powerful stimulant effects, but with a far less troublesome side-effect profile than other stimulants like caffeine and amphetamines.

Long employed in Chinese medicine as a cheaper substitute for the much rarer Ophiocordyceps sinensis, Cordyceps militaris is known to offer a plethora of health benefits, including antidepressant effects, anti-tumor and anti-cancer activity, immune support and overall revitalization.

Cordyceps militaris is a fascinating and unusual member of the ascomycota. An entomopathogenic parasite, it primarily eats insects. This species has evolved a truly bizarre reproductive strategy: it infects insects like leafcutter ants, eventually hijacking their nervous system and compelling the insect to climb as high as possible, where it then dies and the fungus produces mushrooms for further spore dispersal.

Cordyceps are typically grown on a combination of rice, mealworms and/or silkworm pupae. They produce brilliant, orange club-like fruiting bodies which can be dried and sold as-is or made into tea. For more information about Cordyceps cultivation, see the Cordyceps Cultivation Handbook by William Padilla Brown.
