Bear's Head

Hericium americanum

Bear's Head (Hericium americanum)
12cc liquid culture syringe
$15 - $25 suggested donation
A North American native, the Bear's Head is often confused with its adored close cousin, Lion's Mane, and the two are indeed very similar. Their habitat, wood preferences, flavor, medicinal benefits and morphology are all very comparable, but the Bear's Head forms smaller tufts than the classic pom-pom of Lion's Mane.

Long prized by foragers and chefs, Bear's Head mushrooms are among the most delicious and exotic commercial varieties. They delight customers with a novel, even strange appearance backed up by impeccable flavor.

Like Lion's Mane, H. americanum grows slowly in sterile culture, producing thin, wispy mycelium. This strain was cloned from a wild specimen and doesn't win any races. But pound-for-pound, it demonstrates high biological efficiency and consistent yields, with a reasonable time to fruit and great shelf life.
