Turkey Tail is a powerhouse. Widespread and abundant, this species is one of the most prolific primary decomposers of temperate forest ecosystems. A strikingly beautiful, colorful mushroom, it is an amabssador to the Queendom Fungi, alluring the attention of many forest-goers soon to become devout mycophiles.

Though it has been a mainstay of natural medicine for centuries, recent studies investigating its suite of immuno-modulatory metabolites have brought it into the spotlight, and it is now widely available in a variety of forms as a supplement to aid in the healthy function of the body's immune, circulatory and digestive systems. Too tough to be considered edible, it is typically dried and used for tea, powdered as a dietary supplement, or extracted in a tincture or spagyric, often in conjunction with other medicinal mushrooms and herbs.

Tenacious and adaptable, Turkey Tail is a choice candidate both for dowelling logs and stumps for outdoor cultivation, and for indoor cultivation on sterilized or pasteurized wood-based substrates. In addition to its medicinal benefits, it is a fast-growing, aggressive and highly resilient fungus, making it an ideal species for mycoremediation projects. The mycelium is so tough I often have to replace my scalpel blade when working with it in culture, and it is shows great promise in industrial wastewater remediation experiments.

This strain was cloned from a wild specimen growing on a locust stump in the foothills of the Blue Mountains of southeastern Washington.
