Do-It-Yourself
Unlike most mushroom kits, which arrive fully grown, this kit walks you through the whole process from beginning to end—inoculation to harvest—so you get to experience the wonder and excitement of watching the mycelium grow, from a few invisible clusters of cells, to beautiful bouquets of delicious, nourishing food, right there on your kitchen counter. Truly a "hands-on" experience, you'll even get your hands a little dirty and interact intimately with the mushroom mycelium.
Learn-As-You-Grow
For many of us, the best way to learn something new is to try it for ourselves. With the guidance of detailed, carefully written step-by-step instructions, you will get a good sense of the whole process of mushroom cultivation and gain invaluable first-hand experience. As your mushrooms grow, so may your love of all things fungi. This kit is meant to be a perfect first step on what will hopefully become a lifelong journey. No matter how far you choose to wander down this path, there is truly no end to the knowledge that awaits your discovery.
Each kit includes:
- a detailed step-by-step instruction booklet with great tidbits for newcomers to mushroom cultivation
- a liquid culture of Pioppino (Agrocybe aegerita)
- a grow-bag full of hardwood-based mushroom substrate, lovingly prepared, sterilized and ready to inoculate
- two tabletop mushroom fruiting containers (which double as a stackable sprouting system!)
- a bag of pre-mixed topsoil casing
- a small mist sprayer, alcohol swabs, rubber gloves and an "Amateur Mycologist" lapel pin
- a bonus organic sprouts kit for rotating or intercropping with your mushrooms
The process involves inoculating sterilized mushroom substrate with a liquid culture and incubating it for about 3 weeks. Once it's fully grown, you will pasteurize a topsoil mix, transfer the mycelium to the two fruiting containers and cover it with the soil casing. Tend the crop as the mushrooms emerge and mature, and harvest 2-4 "flushes" over the following weeks.
